***Some Spoilers Ahead - But Only the Obvious Ones...***

Plot Synopsis:

Mmmmm, and you wonder why I like werewolf erotica so much? Above is just a teeny snippet of one of the steamy sex scenes gratuitously sprinkled throughout Enforcer. At its core this 146 page short novel is about a human woman avenging her brother's murder and falling in love with a werewolf who may be partly to blame. Regardless of his culpability, they quickly realize they're biological mates, and must work together in order to bring those involved in her brother's death to justice. There is a bit more plot to it than just that...Her culture shock at entering the "Pack," traitors among the wolves, a potentially lethal biological weapon that must be controlled...But that's the main gist.

What I Liked:

The lead female character, Nina, rocks! She's mouthy, doesn't take crap from anyone - including her Big Bad mate and his Alpha wolf brother, and she can hold her own in a fight. She is certainly not a "damsel in distress" kind of gal. She uses a lot of "bad" words which may offend some readers - but then again if you're an "easily offended" type you probably wouldn't want to read this book anyway.

The lead male, Lex, is also pretty cool, though a little one-dimensional. As the title implies, he's the Pack's "Enforcer" which means he deals with any wolves who break the Pack's laws. Sure he's portrayed as having a deadly reputation, but he always gives in to Nina's wishes without much of a fight, making him seem a little "wussy" to me. I tend to like couple-fight-scenes, but these fizzled out too quickly.

What I Didn't Like:

It's certainly not worth a Pulitzer for writing style. However, I've read a lot worse. The author keeps her words simple and the dialog's decidedly urban.

The Sex:

Hot! It makes the book in my opinion. The author uses lots of detail and always includes oral as well as vaginal sex. There is one scene in particular that stands out. It involves the two main characters and Lex's brother. Yep, Nina has to have sex with both of them so she doesn't go insane, literally, for wolf-mating related reasons. Although a little strange, the scene is very well done and appealing to readers who don't normally seek out three-some erotica. From that point on in the story there's an odd, slightly incestuous vibe that happens between Nina and the two brothers which adds to the emotional complexity of the novel.

The Final Test - Would I Read Another Book By This Author?

Yes! She's a keeper!

A Random Walk Down Memory Lane...

I came across some serious sentimental quality memories recently in an old box. One of the things I found was a poem I wrote. Well, actually several. I was a pretty prolific writer way back when. I've discovered over time that when I am happy, I can't write. When I'm sad, lonely and miserable, give me a pen (or a keyboard) and the words start flowing out. It was interesting though to see the date on these selected poems. I was surprised to realize that I was 14 years old when I wrote the following:

The Rain

My feelings pour from my heart
Like the rain that hits my window
Seen but not understood
Steadily beating a silent plea
Over and over, again and again
It rains
For the good and the bad
Like the tears that fall from my eyes
For a reason I don't yet know
A continuous cycle
Like my heart that cries its tears
To never stop, again and again
I wonder
Will I ever understand the rain?

This was closely followed by this one, written just a few months later:

Insomnia

When the night has covered the Earth in her blanket
My memories return.
No warning of what is to come
Just lessons I must learn.

After careful planning, Sadie rode a bus for days and returned to her hometown, Sundre, to try to find her parents whom she had not seen nor talked to in 11 years. She had purchased a run-down farm which she had never seen. She immediately was introduced to Dustin who was her next-door neighbor. Dustin had sworn off women; his wife, Debbie, soon to be his ex-wife, was determined to get him back. It didn’t seem wrong to her that she had slept with men beginning early in their marriage. Now Dustin lived with his sister and her boys while he awaited his divorce. Neither Dustin nor Sadie was interested in each other, initially, because they were scared of starting another relationship.

Ms. Tara Nichols has done a really good job of writing this book; her characters are strong, extremely well-developed, and quite believable. The small town atmosphere, where everyone knows what everyone else is doing, played an important part in this story. Debbie’s vindictiveness proves major trouble for Sadie and Dustin. The plot is unique and there are serious situations which she handled expertly. How Horace is finally able to locate Sadie (and we always knew he would) gripped the reader and proved an incredible circumstance; on top of all this, Sadie searched for her family and, when would she ever discover that the woman Dustin lived with, Josie, was his sister, not his wife!

I highly recommend this story as a great escape into the tension-filled love story of Sadie and Dustin. Ms. Nichols is to be commended.

Morning everyone!

TGIS = Thank God It's Saturday. Saturday's here mean errands, yard work but mainly family time since my DH works during the week. It's our 'play day' with us young ones and today we are painting our new porch. LOL Still qualifies as family time, yes? I foresee the end result with three kids near drenched in paint but with huge smiles. All will be right in their world by the end of today.

Writing...haven't done a lot recently. As many know I lost my father on July 29th, unexpected and so shocking I passed out. I still find it hard to believe and wake some days sure I imagined it all. He was never sick a day in his life besides the odd winter cold and unbeknownst to him or us, he had a brain aneurism. I take solace in the fact that he felt no pain, so the Doc's tell us, because of how quick it was.

I haven't been able to write, which I believe is something I have to work through and I will. It's all in the process of the healing and the like. BUt I have nearly completed edits for Whispers Publishing for my upcoming Contemporary, LAST MAN STANDING. It's a book that I had a lot of fun writing, and even more so adding to the story/characters which was suggested by my editor.

In LMS, Jazz comes face-to-face with the high school boyfriend who...shall we say...never treated her the way he should have and she's hoping that seeing him again after a decade, she'll get over the hurt she felt then and move on. She never expects, however, her best friend (and also a guy she dumped for her highschool boyfriend years ago) and boss, Ryder, to tell her that he's never stopped loving her. Jazz is shocked by this and though she's been attracted to Ryder, she believes their friendship is more important than anything else.

Imagine though, an old high school flame coming back into your life, the one you never really got over... Let's hope Jazz realizes what's in front of her...right...? :)

SO, LMS is nearing edit completion. I haven't recv'd a release date yet, but I will keep everyone posted.

If you're like me, you've never heard of Catherine Ryan Hyde (until now). She's the author of the book Pay It Forward, which was later turned into a movie starring Haley Joel Osment, Helen Hunt, and Kevin Spacey. The concept of Pay It Forward is simple--someone does you a favor, and instead of trying to pay them back you pay it forward by doing something nice for someone else. I was going to start this blog with a picture from that movie, but--DUH--this is a blog about AUTHORS and BOOKS, so I decided to go for the original. :-)

I was the receipient of a random act of extreme kindness recently, and I'm still reeling. An author I had never met judged one of my manuscripts in a contest, and contacted me afterward to tell me she loved the partial and wanted to introduce me to her agent or her editor, anything she could do to help get it sold.

(I still get the shivers when I look at her email.)

It was an incredibly kind gesture, and did wonders for my tender writer's ego.

About a month ago, I was on a plane by myself and in the seats next to me were a mother and her fifteen month and four year old kids. I spent the plane ride entertaining the four year old, because the fifteen month old was screaming (LOUDLY) and he quieted down only if she walked up and down the aisle with him. I held the little one for a while, too, to give her a break. I'd like to think that was a pay it forward moment for me. Of course, I'm still looking for another opportunity to pass on the kindness that was given to me.

I love the Pay It Forward idea, and I think we all Pay It Forward, whether we do so consciously or not. So toot your own horn--when did you Pay It Forward? Or when did someone treat you to an act of random kindness? We'd love to hear your stories.

I really don’t think it’s fair that I have to follow Sabrina Jeffries, especially when I was so busy yesterday with my regular job I couldn’t even post a hello to one of my favorite authors. Oh well, this post will be short because of the same reason--the paying job.

I returned from upstate New York on Sunday after spending a few days up there to visit my mom. She turned 80 years old so we had a little party for her. Well, nothing in my family is ever little. With seven of her nine children there, plus spouses and fifteen out of twenty-three grandchildren, it was quite a little party. And my mom loved every minute of it. She’s looks and acts far more like she’s turning 70 than 80.

My mom always told me she wanted a big family. So here she is now surrounded by her large family and loving it.

But it got me thinking about what I want to be known for when I turn 80. My goal for the past seven years has been getting a book published. Come February I’ll have reached that goal.

So what’s next?

For me it has to be getting my name out there, establishing a reader base and most importantly, not being known as a one hit wonder. When I’m 80, I want to know that I did something. I made people happy, gave them a few moments of escapism, made them think about things in a different way.

Crossing Boundaries and Bending Genders

Crossdressing spans such a wide range of possibilities, erotic and otherwise, that the only thing we can safely say brings the mélange of its practitioners under one umbrella is that they dress (sometimes or all the time) in the clothing of another gender. In an age when gender is becoming increasingly fluid, deconstructed, questioned, and sometimes abandoned, we can begin to see the idea and reality of crossdressing in a new light.

This book focuses on the erotic pleasures of crossdressing, while also touching on the life-changing, mind-melting, earth-shifting experiences that can come from actively playing with one's gender. For some characters, crossdressing means transgressing, transforming, subverting the rules to enter another body in order to enter another world, literally or figuratively. Sometimes it gives them permission to go where they'd be unwanted otherwise. For other characters, playing with their attire lets their minds create the fantasy creature they've always longed to be. It means acting, homecoming, freedom. Sometimes, it's a fun, risqué adventure, a break from the ordinary, a chance to see what might happen if you slipped into a dress or suited up. Would you be the same person? Would you feel the same? Would you get turned on in the same way? These questions and more get tackled in Crossdressing, though the answers are as varied as we are.

When these characters don the clothes of another gender, or another gender role, they find not just their bodies but their minds altered in powerful ways. What was once forbidden is now acceptableæor maybe it's still taboo but even hotter because of it. When they literally step into someone else's shoes, their bodies, minds, and libidos can explore passions they might not dare voice otherwise. Whether it's the bra, panties, and garter tucked away under the charcoal-gray business suit or the bound breasts flattened under a drag king's snazzy attire, clothes, as more than one character here can attest, do "make the man"æor woman, though the person inside those clothes creates his or her power from within as well.

In Stephen Albrow's "More Than Meets the Eye," his businessman protagonist has a secret under his suit that's his private treasure, until he chooses to share it: "My Brooks Brothers shirt is thick enough to cover up my white satin bra and garter belt, but not so thick that I can't feel the garter belt's lace trim as I run my fingertip over my abs. Just knowing this little bit of Suzy is there is enough to calm my nerves." Part of his narrator's delight is in fooling those around him. Yet revealing Suzy to her special lover is a bold thrill that yields untold rewards, and it's this push-pull of discovery and secrecy, of flaunting and hiding, of male and female that makes the story come alive.

These stories are not just about crossing genders but about living with the duality of one within the other, mixed together, mingling—the experience of living as one changing how a person lives as the other. Ashley Laine, the sensual, seductive drag queen narrator of Tulsa Brown's exquisitely rendered "Temporary," reveals the fear that haunts her at being found out: "When his thick fingers began to creep under my panties, I edged away, afraid to ripple the surface of his fantasy." Yet she proceeds, risking rejection for the joy of bringing that duality together into her erotic life. You can feel the shivers Rory delivers to her with the words "Oh, girl"—two simple but powerful words that encapsulate the crux of both Brown's story and this collection as a whole. When these characters--men, women, and those in between or neither at all--are finally able to be recognized for their chosen selves, the thrill goes far beyond the sexual.

Yet sex, desire, lust, and longing are front and center throughout, even as more complex gender dynamics come into play. In Debra Hyde's "Just Like a Boy," we learn that simply turning oneself into a "boy" is not enough for her narrator. She longs to be the boy of her childhood dreams, not "an androgyne in boy's clothes." Yet her venture into male territory isn't only for her but for her lover, Matthias, as well. Hyde draws out the tension in this dominant/submissive relationship, where power gets exerted in twisted, yet intriguing, ways.

The power of uniform gets invoked in Lisabet Sarai's humorous "Beefeater," in which a young British woman mocks familyæand traditionæto dress in the garb of the Yeoman Warders guarding the Tower of London. The secrecy of her mission, combined with the defiant naughtiness of their endeavor, had me rooting for them with all the fervor of anyone who's deliberately disobeyed, half-hoping to get punished.

Crossdressers themselves aren't the only ones here with a tale to tell. In T. Hitman's "Higher and Higher," Pete pretends to be his naughty alter ego, Nate, when he hires Roni, a "dudette" who shows Pete a few tricks as she turns one, worshipping him in ways nobody else ever has. His internal dilemma, caught between sheer arousal and propriety, between who he thinks he should desire and who he actually does, gives us a peek into how those who lust after crossdressers of any variety also struggle to embrace their wants.

In the course of the show, all my fave engineering geniuses put on baseball jerseys and stepped up to the plate in the cause of science.

Let me tell you, 4 geeks + 1 jock = serious conflict in Diana’s brain.

So, Adam can construct an air cannon, but he cannot swing a bat. And when he, Jamie, Grant and Tory took lessons in sliding into second base, it was easy to see they were not the first guys picked for the team except at the Science Olympics. The highlight of this episode was when Grant exclaimed, “But I can build a robot that can slide!” That, my friends, is it in a nutshell. These are guys who have spent a lifetime substituting brain for brawn.

Well, I get turned on by science geeks, and have ever since this guy in my high school physics class diagrammed for me his concept of the self-harvesting potato. But I also get turned on by baseball players. Imagine my quandary watching this show. Grant indeed gets sexiness points for having designed and built a killer batting machine that hits harder than Roger Clemens ever could (or Barry Bonds, for that matter). I can picture Adam laughing maniacally and shouting, “Your split-finger fastball can’t help you now, Rocket! Bwahaha!”

But still, I shudder when remembering my science heroes trying to catch Roger’s pitches. Not good, boys, not good.

And all these years I’ve thought myself to be a sound supporter of Anthony Michael Halls of the world. I love stories where the pretty girl rebuffs the quarterback and rides off into the sunset with the president of the Science Club. It all works well until Anthony Michael Hall steps out of the lab and tries to throw a football or make a free throw. It’s just so hard to feel attracted to a guy when you’re cringing. Crossing Boundaries and Bending Genders

Crossdressing spans such a wide range of possibilities, erotic and otherwise, that the only thing we can safely say brings the mélange of its practitioners under one umbrella is that they dress (sometimes or all the time) in the clothing of another gender. In an age when gender is becoming increasingly fluid, deconstructed, questioned, and sometimes abandoned, we can begin to see the idea and reality of crossdressing in a new light.

This book focuses on the erotic pleasures of crossdressing, while also touching on the life-changing, mind-melting, earth-shifting experiences that can come from actively playing with one's gender. For some characters, crossdressing means transgressing, transforming, subverting the rules to enter another body in order to enter another world, literally or figuratively. Sometimes it gives them permission to go where they'd be unwanted otherwise. For other characters, playing with their attire lets their minds create the fantasy creature they've always longed to be. These stories are not just about crossing genders but about living with the duality of one within the other, mixed together, mingling—the experience of living as one changing how a person lives as the other. Ashley Laine, the sensual, seductive drag queen narrator of Tulsa Brown's exquisitely rendered "Temporary," reveals the fear that haunts her at being found out: "When his thick fingers began to creep under my panties, I edged away, afraid to ripple the surface of his fantasy." The secrecy of her mission, combined with the defiant naughtiness of their endeavor, had me rooting for them with all the fervor of anyone who's deliberately disobeyed, half-hoping to get punished.

Crossdressers themselves aren't the only ones here with a tale to tell. In T. Hitman's "Higher and Higher," Pete pretends to be his naughty alter ego, Nate, when he hires Roni, a "dudette" who shows Pete a few tricks as she turns one, worshipping him in ways nobody else ever has. It is an attempt to make kink more conservative, and transgender more acceptable and less threatening, not only to outsiders but to those who themselves identify as transgender. Some will say, "Crossdressing is not about a different sexual orientation but about a different gender identity." Part of what I, as an author, love most is interaction with my readers. When someone takes the time to write to me, it’s extremely special. Of course I love compliments but occasionally an email will turn into a whole conversation.

Emma from London has been regaling the League of Amazing Writers (my Yahoo group) with true stories of her elderly neighbor, “Miss Wow,” for a couple of years now. Caren: Welcome to the Romance Bandits blog, Sabrina. We're very happy to have you visit us! Your latest release from Pocket, Beware a Scot's Revenge, hit #14 on the New York Times Bestseller List. Congratulations! Were you surprised at the popularity of the School For Heiresses series or do you see it as a natural evolution?

Sabrina: Thanks, Caren, it's great to be here, especially now that I've met some of the Banditas in person at conference! Actually, I was kind of surprised. I didn't think it was a concept that would be as popular as the Royal Brotherhood, but I've been pleased that some readers are really liking the books.

(Caren: [mumbling] A lot of readers apparently, since it was #14 on the Times...)

Caren: "Beware a Scot's Revenge" was the third book in your School For Heiresses series. When is the next book due out and what can you tell us about it?

Sabrina: The next book comes out Feb. 19, 2008 and is titled Let Sleeping Rogues Lie. I just got the cover for it, and it's spectacular. It's about Anthony Dalton, the Viscount Norcourt. He grudgingly agrees to teach a few rake lessons at the school under the "supervision" of Miss Madeline Prescott, math and science teacher extraordinaire (they called them naturalists in those days), who is way too pretty for a schoolteacher. Little does he know that Madeline secretly needs his help...or that helping her is liable to put an end to his rakehell existence once and for all.

I had a lot of fun with Madeline, who tends to approach sex from a scientific viewpoint...and tells Anthony that his rakehell behavior isn't "safe" or practical, which is pretty much all she cares about. It catches the big bad rakehell off guard. He's used to getting censured for entirely different reasons.

Caren: In addition to your sexy Regency historicals with Pocket, I happen to know you have dabbled in some Southern fiction for the past few years with Belle Books. Tell us about that.

Sabrina: I read the very first Mossy Creek book (it's a collective novel, made up of stories written by different writers and loosely connected around an event in the town) because I knew the writers. But I got completely sucked in. In fact, I have now read every book in the series - generally I read them as soon as they come out. I just love the small town of Mossy Creek, and all its quirky characters. I like the series so much that I begged to be included. And they let me write a story for A Day in Mossy Creek and At Home in Mossy Creek. The first one wasn't a romance (hey, I was stretching). But the second one is.

(Caren:[squeals] I'm a Mossy Creek fan girl, too! Sorry...)

Caren: I know you claim to be a plot-driven author and your plots are always quite intricate. And yet, your characters are all three-dimensional and fully realized. How do you achieve such a balance?

Sabrina: Don't mention intricate plots - my upcoming one has a little too much intricacy. I get carried away sometimes. *sigh* As for characters, it took me years to learn how to make my characters three-dimensional. I have a number of questions I ask myself about my characters before I even start, but mostly I try to go against type. I mean, alpha males don't all have to be alike. And heroines definitely don't.

Caren: You are well known for having series of connected books. As a matter of fact, except for your first two Sabrina Jeffries books, haven't they all been part of a series? And, do you ever think you'll write a true stand-alone book again?

Sabrina: My first two books are part of a series, too, actually. It's only my Deborah Martin books that were sometimes stand-alone. I suppose it's possible that I could go back to stand-alones one day, but I doubt it. I really love series. Always have. I was delighted when they got to be popular with readers. I don't think I'm alone in that either - mystery and science fiction and fantasy readers have all preferred series for years. It makes perfect sense to me that they'd also be popular with romance readers. We like to visit the same familiar world over and over, only with different characters at the helm.

Caren: What other works do you have in the pipeline at Pocket? Any plans to branch out to other subgenres or try something new and different?

Sabrina: Right now, I have two books left (after Let Sleeping Rogues Lie) in my School for Heiresses series, including the one for Cousin Michael and Charlotte, so I'm focused on that. I have a couple of other ideas for other subgenres, but I'm still not tired of writing Regency historicals, so I'll probably keep it up a while longer. I really don't know. That's two books off!

[Sabrina ponders] But I'm curious to know how readers feel about their authors branching off into new directions. Would readers follow me if I wrote, say, a time travel? Or a contemporary with mythical elements? Not sure if I'm ready to do that, but I do have ideas.

I didn't even know I had written a romance before a year ago. So, needless to say, I'm pleased and gung ho to see what I can do to make it readable.

Waffle Panties?

Yes, that's right. I said "Waffle Panties." I dont mean edible undies, you freaks. Although, if Aunt Jamima ever gets tired of showing off her boobies for the syrup bottle, she could make some extra cash by making waffle flavored undies. So, I spent the entire day wearing some weird Victoria's Secret panties that look like this. (If you didnt get a good look at em, go ahead, click the link again. I wont tell your mom you're really staring at the girl) I found these buried deep in the recesses of my dresser. I tore through my drawers trying to find something that more closely resembled these. Hot right? I know. Instead I wore the horrible lacy undies.

I did this for two reasons. A: I was all out. All my other underwear was hang-drying or dirty. And B: I wanted something to blog about. You see? I sacrificed my ASS for this. So now that I am at the end of my day, my ass is waffled. The thick lace has left an impression on my ass. Usually my ass leaves the impression, not the other way around!

Moral of the story kiddies: Unless you enjoy the feeling of tough lace branding your ass, don't wear lacy Victoria's Secret hip hugging undies.
